Background:

  • Found in the human plasma and in majority of cases is linked to the high density lipoproteins (HDL). It is also part of the lipocalin family.
  • Structure is one of a tertiary beta-barrel that can function as a carrier of hydrophobic ligands (small). It also has a major role in the repair and up keep of the peripheral and central nervous systems.
  •  Also has been found to show binding activity to the following molecules; pregnenolone, cholesterol, arachidonic acid, bilirubin and progesterone. Also, various tissues which include; testes, brain and spleen show elevated expression levels of Apo-D.
